Helpful Hints for Parent Dances

These dances are a time for you to spend an intimate moment with a parent, guardian or otherwise loved person. It is a great chance to slow down, take some time to soak in the day and maybe even have a quiet conversation. These dances are usually the highlight of the evening for most parents, however, they can sometimes prove to be very stressful for the Bride and/or Groom as there is a lot of pressure. That being said, please let us know if this dance needs to be adjusted in any way, shape or form. We want to make sure these dances are as comfortable as possible. The DJ will introduce the dance accordingly based on the bride and grooms preferences, will play as much (or as little) of the songs as you'd like and make sure these dances occur at a time when you are ready and prepared!
This dance can happen in a variety of places and their are pros and cons to each option.
If you are unsure about when you might like to have parent dances, take a look at the options below.

Directly after the First Dance
Pro: Everyone's attention is still directed to the dance floor.
Pro: Some people consider this to be "getting it out the way", a good option for those looking to do so.
Pro: Since everyone is in the room and near the dance floor you won't have to worry about trying to locate anyone.
Con: Some people feel it gets to be too much and interest can be lost when watching all the special dances back to back.

During or after Dinner
Pro: Breaks up the dances so everything isn't back to back.
Con: Depending on timing some people may not be in the room and will miss it or they will not be paying attention to the dance.
Con: The DJ will do their best to make sure the people involved in the dance are in the room when it is announced. However, its easy for the bride, groom and/or parents to be distracted with other things going on throughout the reception.

Before or after Cake Cutting

Pro: If you are doing a cake cutting, it creates a time to stop for both of these pieces of the event, instead of stopping once for each.
Con: If you are also doing a bouquet/garter toss, and you plan to do it around cake cutting, it can be a lot of things in a row.
Con: Generally cake cutting happens later in the evening and if you are looking to get parent dances done early, this would not be a good option for you.

Keep In Mind:
  • Always bring up the timing of these dances with your venue coordinator or planner. They may have input as to what the venue typically does based on a timeline they like to follow.
  • Also feel free to talk it over with your DJ. We are Pros and would love to give you any advice.
  • Last, remember that the more your DJ knows, the smoother things will run during the event. Be sure to keep them in the loop about specific details or sensitive matters regarding the parents or the dances themselves.

Parent Dance Music

The DJ will typically play about 2 minutes into the song and will ask for a round of applause.
If it is important to you to have the full length of the song played please be sure to specify this.
